Why Should I Attend Church?

Great question!

Skipping church is easy to do. It's your weekend, after all. And churches aren't perfect. You may feel content in your personal relationship with God - that you don't need the crowd. But isolation has a cost as well - have you ever hear that phrase, "When you're the smartest person in the room, you're not learning anything"? Being part of an organized Christian community is guaranteed to challenge you, help you grow and enrich your faith. And you may be surprised to know it's not just about you! The Christian community needs YOU too!

In Hebrews, Chapter 10, Verses 24 & 25, we are told of our obligation towards our fellow Christians:
"24 And let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds, 25 not giving up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but encouraging one another—and all the more as you see the Day approaching."
The assembly of believers is encouraged explicitly by Jesus, who said in Matthew, Chapter 18, Verse 20:
"20 For where two or three gather in my name, there am I with them."
That's strong motivation. Jesus set the example for us by worshiping and teaching each Sabbath, for in Luke Chapter 4, Verse 16, we read:
"16 He went to Nazareth, where he had been brought up, and on the Sabbath day he went into the synagogue, as was his custom."
The New Testament is replete with examples of Christians gathering together - it's what we do! The act of attendance is a public testimony. The community helps to keep us accountable. It's an opportunity to worship and pray with your fellow believers.

Your relationship with God will mature and develop positively through this interaction with other members of the family of God and hearing the Word each Sunday. Interacting with your local community of Christians is rewarding, affirming, energizing, and necessary.

At First American Baptist Church, we welcome your attendance and it is our hope that we can help you to know God through a personal relationship with Jesus Christ. It is our prayer that you will grow in your faith through the teaching of God's Word and that the Holy Spirit will lead and guide you into even a greater understanding and appreciation of what it means to be a Christian.
